Evaluation of Education On Cad/cam In Turkish Dental Schools

Aim: In today’s digital era, it is necessary to make changes and improvements in the curriculum of restorative and prosthetic dentistry. Information is limited to what extent new dental technologies are involved in educational curricula in our country. This study had an aim to assess to what extent the training in Turkish Dental Schools relates to CAD/CAM technology.

Study Design: Dental schools of the Republic of Turkey with undergraduate students to graduate in 2015–2016-academic-year were included in the study. Twenty-nine questionnaires with 15 questions were mailed. The questionnaire, appealing to the Head of Prosthetic Dentistry Departments, was meant to understand how and where the CAD/CAM topic was included in the curriculum and what the departments’ opinions were regarding making a requirement to provide this training. The results were analysed using descriptive statistics.

Results: The response rate was 41% (n=12). Fifty percent of the schools were established after 2000 and 67% of them owned a CAD/CAM device. None had established CAD/CAM-related tasks in preclinical phase and 33% indicated, such training was not needed in the undergraduate curriculum. More than half of the institutions stressed, CAD/CAM education should take place in the graduate curriculum. In contrast, half declared, they did not provide practical CAD/CAM training at graduate level. Fifty-eight percent of the institutions reported up to 25% CAD/CAM use in clinic. All declared, the use of CAD/CAM technology in dentistry would spread more in the future. The most important advantages of this technology were emphasized as; speed (67%), standard production (67%) and fewer errors (67%), while the main disadvantage as; cost (67%).

Conclusion: In conclusion; CAD/CAM was not yet included in practical training at the undergraduate dental education, but there was sufficient awareness in this regard and high demand for it. Keywords : CAD/CAM, dental education, digital dentistry, awareness
