Factors Affecting The Career Choices of Firstyear Nursing Students

Kafkas Üniversitesi Kars Sağlık Yüksekokulu, Hemşirelik Bölümü, Kars, Türkiye Purpose: This study aims to determine the factors that influence the career choices of first-year nursing students.

Method: The study population of this descriptive study consisted of 164 first-year students at the nursing department of a health scholl, Turkey, in the spring semester of the 2014-2015 academic year. The study was carried out with 120 students who agreed to participate in the research without any sample selection. A questionnaire developed by the researchers and HMSÖ were used for data collection. Percentage distributions, ANOVA, t-test, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann Whitney U and Dunn's tests were used in the statistical analysis of the data.

Results: The mean score of students taken in HMSÖ was 50.56±15.07. A statistically significant difference was found between students' gender, willingness in choosing the nursing department, love of profession, and reason to choose this profession and the total score in the career choice scale (p<0.05).

Conclusion: It was found effective in choosing of the nursing profession students have gender with the girl, choosing the profession willingly, love their profession and job opportunities.It is recommended that introductory programs should be organized for the high school students to promote the profession, and the nursing students should be supported by educators to make them know and love the profession and to create a professional identity.
